Is there anything more threatening and uninviting than the typical performance review process? Rebecca Knight wrote a blog on the Harvard Business Review Best Practices Blog Network (November, 2011) that “For many employees, a face-to-face performance review is the most stressful conversation they’ll have all year.” She continued by writing that the annual performance review forces each manager to “drag each of your direct reports into a conference room for a one-on-one, hand them an official looking document, and then start in with the same, tired conversation.

The typical performance review process lacks authenticity, human connection and inspiration. Managers usually hate them as they are reluctant to criticize their direct reports and are intimidated by the prospects of having to do so. Besides, performance reviews tend to take a lot of time (preparation, documentation, meetings, follow up, etc.) and take valuable time away from achieving short term business objectives. Direct reports fear them because of the lack of authenticity and potential threat to their careers. Both managers and nonsupervisory employees are greatly relieved when the process is over and, unfortunately, some lingering resentment is often the end result.

At Points of You, we see performance reviews as an opportunity to build connections with strong performers and to develop poor performers in a genuine and motivating way. A performance review should not be a mishmash of forms, documentation and pure dread – but an opportunity to build relationships and trust. The Points of You process encourages both the manager and direct report to tell their stories in a genuine way that is unintimidating and focused on building on strengths and providing support and resources to address weaknesses. The manager serves as a helpful coach and one who is dedicated to helping his/her direct report grow and flourish.  The use of Point of You’s evocative photos and inspiring stories are pivotal in the process.

Imagine actually looking forward to a performance review!
